Get To Know The Breed

‘Hungarian Vizslas are known as velcrow dogs due to their bond with their owners’

Affectionate Personalities.

Hungarian Vizsla’s are highly intelligent and form emotional attachments to their owners very easily. They’re known to be described as ‘velcrow’ dogs and definitely live up to the name. Orgininally, Vizsla’s were bred for being retriever dogs, and due to their historical nature of being immensely in tune with their owners, who at the time would have been hunters, have developed close bonds with their owners.

As a puppy, it is recommended that owners spend at least two or three hours per day perfroming socially engaging activities. This can include excercise such as walks, playing with toys, and also affection. Some have described this breed as being ‘clingy’, but from my own experience, if you want a strong bond with your dog, a Vizsla will provide this and much more.

Their coats consist of an orange hue that glistens in the sun. Due to their athletic build, Vizsla’s are ideal for long walks as adults, and recquire at least two hours of intense exercise. This makes them ideal for athletic owners, and owners with younger children due to their docile nature.

There are also different variants of the Vizsla, with another type being the ‘wired-haired’ variant. This type of Vizsla was developed in the 1930’s and was bred to deflect even harsher weather environments. They’re thought to be slightly more aggressive than the typical Hungarian Vizsla, but are still suited to families with younger children despite this concern.

Anatomy

Hungarian Vizsla’s have a life span of 12-15 years, and stand at 21-24 inches at the chest.

  • Males are typically larger, weighing around 55-60 pounds, whereas females are usually smaller in size, weighing roughly 45-55 pounds. Although there can be exceptions, depending on the size at birth, with runts of the litter sometimes being male, affecting growth rate.
  • Vizsla’s are generally considered to be a fairly healthy breed. However, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and cancer are all things to watch out for. It is recommended that Vizsla’s are checked for hip evaluations, thyroid evaluations, and opthalmologist evaluations as they age.
  • As they age, there is a concern that owners will find fatty lumps pertruding from undernearth the skin. This is quite common in senior Vizslas and are usually benign lipomas. However, there is always the possibility of cancer, so annual visits to a vetenary clinic are recommended.
